There is nothing in the digital world around the world right now that can stop Squid Game, which has quickly become the most successful show on Netflix. It was released on September 17, and within weeks of streaming, it has broken all viewership records on the platform, leaving the last successful top show Bridgerton behind. But did you know that the creator had seen the show as a movie and not an episodic series?
For the inexperienced, Squid Game is a fictional show about a dystopian set where more than 400 participants, who are heavily in debt, agree to play deadly children’s games that will make them big money. But if they lose, they have to pay with their lives. The show with all the blood and brutal nature has struck a chord with the audience. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has now started shaping the show as a movie.
We all know the hardship that Hwang Dong-hyuk went through to realize Squid Game. The filmmaker struggled for 10 years with the script in his hand, with a financial crisis halfway through to some degree where he sold his laptop. He now elaborates on the idea of turning the script into a movie.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said: “So in 2008 I had a script that I had written, that I was running around getting investment, but it didn’t work and it wasn’t made into a movie. So that brought I was actually in a really tough financial situation – I was broke. So I spent a lot of time reading in comic bars. And I read a lot of comic books about surviving death games – manga like Liar Game, Kaiji, and Battle Royale. And well, I read some stories about these people in debt taking on these games of life and death, and that got really compelling for me as I was struggling financially myself.
The Hwang Dong-hyuk added: “In fact, I thought I would like to join such a game, if it existed, to earn a lot of money and get out of this terrible situation. And then I thought: “Well, I’m a director. Why don’t I just make a movie with a storyline like that?” So that’s how it all started. I decided I wanted to make a Korean survival game in my own way. That’s how Squid Game was born in 2008 and then I wrote a script for a full-length film version in 2009.”
