Yesterday the first teaser trailer was released for Pixar’s upcoming movie, light year. Following the space adventures of the Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear, the new animated film will reveal the grand Buzz Lightyear identity, not the toys. Voiced by Marvel’s Chris Evans, light year will show who Buzz always assumed he was in the Toy Story films, despite its plastic form.
Confused? Don’t worry, director Angus MacLane explains light year looks more like a movie that would be watched within the Toy Story universe, rather than a sequel to it. Check out the latest teaser and what to expect from the upcoming Buzz Lightyear original movie.
The new trailer of light year
In the teaser trailer, we see Buzz Lightyear (the space keeper, not the toy) getting ready for a dangerous space mission. With David Bowie’s ‘Starman’ game, Buzz Lightyear travels to alien planets, talks to robots and even reveals his iconic green and white spacesuit.
The movie will obviously not be set in Andy’s bedroom, but in the world Buzz Lightyear was programmed to believe existed. A daring space keeper, light year will follow Buzz’s harrowing space adventures that he never seems to mention at first Toy Story movie.
Director explains how light year fits the Toy Story canon
“’Located in the world of Toy Story‘ is a bit weird,’ he told Entertainment Weekly. “Another way to find out is a straight forward sci-fi action movie about the Buzz Lightyear character.”
MacLane continued: “In the… Toy Story universe, it would be like a movie Andy might have seen that would make him want a Buzz Lightyear character.”
“The movie doesn’t stop and you see Andy eating popcorn,” he added. “This is its own thing. . . This stands alone. It’s the Buzz Lightyear movie. It’s that character, but as a space keeper, not as a toy.”
Buzz Lightyear’s Identity Crisis
MacLane further explained the connection with: Toy Stories universe: “When you hear about the Buzz Lightyear of Toy Story talking about its space-watchmanship or Star Command, it’s really a one-note amalgam of sci-fi cliches, and that’s the point of that movie.
“If you were to make that world real, you can’t constantly feel like it’s a distracted thing.”
He went on to detail that light year also references the entire franchise when “Buzz disagrees on the nature of reality,” such as when the character in the 1995 film doesn’t accept that he’s a toy.
“So for us, the core idea we wanted to build on was, how do you make a character out of step with the world around them?” concluded the director.
Essentially a Buzz Lightyear origin story
Pixar’s Pete Docter was previously called light year the “definitive story of the original Buzz Lightyear” but with “a new twist on an iconic character”.
Captain America‘s Chris Evans voices the titular space keeper light year. Evans called being part of the film a “dream come true”. He confessed: “I can’t believe I get to be part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories like no other. Watching them work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day.”
No other cast members have been announced for the film. light year was first announced nearly a year ago on Disney Investor Day 2020. The film will premiere in theaters on June 17, 2022.
