Few things get audience cheering like a good sports movie, and this holiday season, movie fans get a new potential crowd-pleaser in American Underdog, a biopic about NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner.
Shall American Underdog join the pantheon of great football movies like Remember the Titans, On any Sunday, Rudy and others? We’ll have to wait and see, but in the meantime, here’s everything you need to know American Underdog.
When is the release date of ‘American Underdog’?
American Underdog will try to cater to the public’s desire to see something that can make the whole family feel good during the holiday season with its release on Christmas Day, December 25th. It won’t hit theaters until it’s released.
Positive, it doesn’t look like American Underdog will have a small, limited release, as the film’s marketing material says it will be “everywhere”. Be sure to check your local theater listings when the movie comes out to find out exactly where “everywhere” applies as far as you live.
What is the plot of ‘American Underdog’?
Many NFL fans know the story of Kurt Warner, a journeyman quarterback who spent time in arena football, NFL Europe, and worked in a grocery store before fully realizing his dreams of playing in the NFL, most notably with then-St. Louis Rams.
American Underdog will share and elaborate on this story as it is based on the book Warner co-wrote with Michael Silver, All Things Possible.

“American Underdog tells the inspiring true story of Kurt Warner, who went from a grocery store stockboy to a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Hall of Fame quarterback. The film revolves around Warner’s unique story and years of challenges and setbacks that could have derailed his ambitions to become an NFL player – but just when his dreams seemed almost unattainable, it is only with the support of his wife, Brenda, and the encouragement of his family, coaches and teammates that Warner perseveres and finds the strength to show the world the champion he already is. American Underdog is an uplifting story that shows that anything is possible with faith, family and determination.”
Who plays the cast of ‘American Underdog’?
Leading the way for American Underdog as Kurt Warner will be Zachary Levi. Some of Levi’s most famous credits are his time on the NBC show Chuck, the utterance of Flynn Rider’s character in Disney’s confused and the lead role in the DC superhero movie Shazam.
One of the main supporting actors in the film are Anna Paquin (X-Men star and Oscar winner for The piano) as Brenda Warner and Dennis Quiad (who has some experience with sports movies at Disney’s) the newcomer) as Rams head coach Dick Vermeil.
Other actors in the cast include Adam Baldwin, Bruce McGill, Ser’Darius Blain, Chance Kelly, Brett Varvel, OJ Keith Simpson
Who Directs ‘American Underdog’
The directing duo of Andrew and Joe Erwin (aka the Erwin Brothers) are the men behind the front camera American Underdog; Joe Erwin also wrote the script with David Aaron Cohen and Jon Gunn.
In recent years, the Erwin Brothers have made many faith-based or faith-inspired films, including: I can only imagine, I still believe and the documentary The Jesus music. They also previously combined faith and football in the indie film forest grass.
Is there a trailer for ‘American Underdog’?
Lionsgate, which is co-producing the film with Kingdom Story Company, recently released a new trailer for: American Underdog. The film showcases much of the football action and even includes a sound bite from famed announcer Al Michaels who describes Warner’s story as a little “too good for the movie” – guess Al.
