Although it has been more than two decades since the tragic death of Diana Princess of Wales, her life and story continue to inspire the intrigue and obsession of her fans and those who believe in the conspiracies surrounding her death. There are dozens of films, series and documentaries documenting her time in the royal family, the latest being the Kristen Stewart vehicle, Spencer.
Spencer had its world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021. It also screened at the 48th Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. It was released in theaters on November 1 in a wide circulation nationwide. Like all new movies since the onset of COVID-19, the question is, where can you find them to stream online?
Kristen Stewart was cast in the titular role of Diana, Princess of Wales (born Diana Frances Spencer, reflected in the title), who was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales. The plot focuses on a particular part of her life, years after she got married and became the mother of two boys when she decides to end her marriage to Charles and resign from the royal family.
Stewart’s interpretation of the character explores Diana’s emotional journey as she copes with a failing marriage, her individuality, motherhood and the fact that she is a famous face of the British Royal Family. Jack Farthing, who supports the role of Stewart, plays the part of Prince Charles. While most biopics tend to focus on broader segments of the subject’s life, Spencer focuses on a weekend during a mental break for Diana.
In addition to Stewart and Farthing, the ensemble cast of Spencer also includes Timothy Spall, Sean Harris, Sally Hawkins, Jack Nielen, Freddie Spry, Stella Gonet, Richard Sammel, Olga Hellsing, Thomas Douglas, Mathias Wolkowski, Oriana Gordon, and Amy Manson, among others.
Is the Spencer movie online
Unfortunately, the smaller, independent studios still have to take on concurrent releases online to coincide with the theatrical releases in the same way that larger studios do. For all of 2021, movies like Disney’s aladdin & Mulan have visited the Disney+ streaming service, and Dune & Mortal Kombat hit WB’s HBO Max (the latter is free to watch the latest releases).
The Spencer movie is distributed by Neon and Topic Studios in the United States and STXfilms in the United Kingdom. At this point, the only option to watch the biopic is to go to your nearest theater. After its first weekend of showings, the film has only brought in just over $2 million as it needed to compete with Marvel’s The Eternals and Daniel Craig’s final appearance as James Bond in No time to die.
Ever since No time to die, released in October, is already set to get video on demand (VOD) on Tuesday, audiences may not have to wait too long to see the film from the comfort of their own homes. Releases for VOD seem to be moving much faster (traditionally, on-demand or DVD releases took place nearly six months after the theater shows, as studios worry that viewers are still hesitant to flock to the theaters.
If the current one to three month release trend holds, it may be possible to Spencer movie on a streaming service in time to watch with your family during Christmas. The Spencer movie will face stiff competition in the coming months, as Netflix plans to delay the release of red notice (starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot), and HBO Max will see the release of King Richard (starring Will Smith).
Do you still prefer the theaters over streaming a new movie at home, or has the pandemic sparked a desire to watch these new releases on the couch in your pajamas? Are you excited to see Kristen Stewart take on the role of Princess Diana in the? Spencer movie? Or are you still stuck with her as the girl from Twilight?
